Virginia Math 3-4 Circles

Trusted Year-Round Support for Virginia Math Students

Math is Like Sports

Students who excel in math have their pick of colleges, professions, and careers.

Recognizing this, Virginia’s great public and private schools have added advanced college-level math courses.

Parents and students have also raised their game. They know that math talent must be developed just like athletic talent. Great math students, like great athletes, are made, not born.

To reach their full potential, math students, like athletes, need deliberate practice, expert coaching, and supportive teammates.

This is what the Virginia School of Math provides with our Virginia Math Circles.

Virginia Math Circles

Virginia Math Circles are two to six students who meet weekly with their Math Circle Leader.

Meetings are one hour and forty-five minutes long and have three segments: Deliberate Practice, Math Preview, and Group Challenge.

During Deliberate Practice (~60 min), students make progress against individual goals using our own curriculum and their homework and study guides from school.

In Math Preview (~25 min), the Math Circle learns new concepts they will see soon in their school courses.

Group Challenge (~20 min) extends the math taught in school with open-ended creative puzzles, competition problems, and real-world applications.

Topics include: addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, fractions, decimals, measurement, geometry, probability, patterns, graphing, and word problems.
